Flint Club’s General Motors Birthday party at River Bank Park

Flint Institute of Arts, July 12 from July 20 (Gallery Cruise)
In celebration of General Motors 100th anniversary, the FIA is inviting Flint area residents to submit photographs of a favorite car or truck. The photographs will be displayed in the Ford Graphics Gallery from July 13-20.

Participants may submit up to 3 photographs of favorite cars and trucks. Photos must be unframed. Submit an original photograph or a digitally reproduced image on photo quality paper no larger than 8” x 10”, if the photograph needs to be returned to the owner at the end of the exhibition, the lender must label the reverse of the photograph and include a self addressed stamped envelope for the photo to be returned in. The photographs will be installed using binder clips and hung on the wall. The Flint Institute of Arts is not responsible for lost or damaged photographs. The FIA recommends sending copies of original photographs. Please do not submit commercially reproduced images such as advertisements. Photos must be submitted to the Flint Institute of Arts no later than July 6, 2008; Flint Institute of Arts 1120 E. Kearsley Street Flint, MI 48503.

The Art Sales and Rental Gallery at the FIA is featuring original artwork of GM Automobiles from all eras done by local artists. We have artwork done by Robert Salo, a commercial artist who worked in Detroit for General Motors and Ford Motor Company. We are also featuring GM Automobiles done by John McCormick, Thomas Thiery and Ken Taylor, and Flint and Genesee County area landmarks done by WIlliam Stolpin, Carole Brender and Jim Anthony, all prominent local artists. Flint/General Motors Family Reunion at Kearsley Park, Sunday July 13 from 1 pm - 6 pm
A GM Family reunion in Kearsley Park will kick off the week featuring children games, music, food, and an old fashion baseball game between GM divisions. Free to the public, the hope is to get families from around the country to come visit Flint.

Buick Club of America Annual Meet, Tuesday July 15 through Saturday July 19
Buick Club of America Annual Meet, over 1500 cars on display in the Cultural Center, lectures, concerts and swap meet.

Birthplace of General Motors Tour, July 16-19 from 10 am - 4 pm
Tour the Durant Dort Headquarters, a National Landmark recognized as the Birthplace of General Motors. 316 Water Street, Carriage Town; Admission is Free!

Stockton Center at Springrove, July 16-19 from 10 am - 5 pm
The home of Col. Stockton and his wife Maria was built in 1872 and became the first St.
Joseph Hospital in Flint, 1921. The original home and the hospital wing will be open for tours. The museum focuses on Civil War history and early Flint history, and will have special displays regarding the medical field over the past 100 years. Concert in Riverbank Park, July 17 at 7 pm
Enjoy the summer evening listening to music of the Genesee Valley Concert Band. Free Admission. Take a paddle boat ride in the river Thursday thru Sunday.

Applewood Garden Tour, Thursday July 17 from 10 am - 5 pm
Tour the grounds of Charles Stewart Mott’s Applewood Estate. Items planned for this day include family activities, historic displays and refreshments that honor C.S. Mott’s contribution to and influence on GM. Guided garden tours at 11am and 2 pm.

Mott Community College Technology Center Open House, Thursday July 17 from 1 pm - 4pm
Demo of the Smart machines being used in industry today! Flexible Manufacturing Cell, rapid prototyping systems. Some hands on activity. Located to the east of Applewood Estate.

Sloan Buick Gallery Apprenticeship Display
Select students from the Mott Community College Auto Body program have been able to gain valuable skills in the art of auto restoration. The Studebaker Club and the Buick Drivers Club have made it possible for students to work as apprentices at the Buick Auto Gallery. On display we will have a restored Studebaker and a restored Buick, along with information about the apprenticeship.

The Factory Five MK3 Roadster "Cobra" Build Class Display
Mott Community College has the only Factory Five build school in the country. Every month students gather at Mott Community College's Livingston Campus to learn how to build a Factory Five vehicle in a three day build school. See a sample of the finished MK3 Roadster and one in progress.

Automotive Technology
The automotive technology program at Mott Community College will have a display of some of the new technology in the auto industry, including hybrid auto technology and a display of new analyzers.

Kettering University Open House, Friday July 18 from 1 pm - 4 pm
Start with a tour of the Archives located in the Campus Center which houses the papers of GM Founder, Billy Durant, and Charles Kettering, inventor of the Electric Starter. Visit the schools crash test labs, and fuel cell labs.

Michigan Story Tellers Festival, Friday July 18 and Saturday July 19
28th annual Michigan Story Teller Festival on the grounds of the Flint Public Library. Admission is free.

GM 100th Car Cruise, Friday July 18 starting at 7 pm
Cruise begins from the three Flint Meijer stores, 2333 Center Road, 2474 Hill Road, and 4333 W. Pierson Road. After the cruise, go to downtown Flint for a big party on Saginaw Street under the arches. Free dash plaques to the first 1000 participants.

Be a guest of the Rotary Club of Flint to hear the Key note speaker, James M. Hresko, Vice President of GM quality, "GM next-present and Future". Cost is $10.00

Flint GM 100th Fireworks, Friday July 18 at 10 pm Atwood Stadium
Front row seats will be available at Atwood stadium free of charge to see this 20 minute fireworks show complete with music. Tune in to Cars108 FM to hear the music from anywhere you might be to watch the fireworks.

Metawanene Hills Preview Event and Garden Party, Friday July 18 from 5:30 pm - 8 pm
With dessert and lemonade in hand, stroll through and bask in the beauty of one of the most well-kept and imaginative gardens in the Metawanene Hills Community. Join us in the garden at 515 Copeman, then wander through Ramona Park and sample home baked goods from neighborhood residents and enjoy a MHNA beautification project. Tour one home whose interior features will surprise and delight. This home is but a sample of what
is in store when you return on Saturday for the extended activities of the Metawanene Hills Home Fair and Tour. Ticket Price: $6.00. Charles Nash Home Tour, Saturday July 19 from 11am - 4pm
Tour the first home of Charles Nash in Flint just behind the Durant Dort Office building on Mason Street. Charles Nash lived here while he worked for the Carriage Company, before moving on to head Buick and General Motors. The house will be open 11 am -4 pm.

     

Flint GM 100th Home Tour, Saturday July 19 from 10 am – 4 pm
Tour five homes built for General Motors Executives between 1920 through 1940. Homes include; Buick Engineer F.A. Bower, GM President Harlow Curtice, Buick President E.T, Strong, GM Dealer and US Post Master Arthur Summerfield and James Parkhill, President Armstrong Spring Co. Metawanene Home Fair and Tour, Saturday July 19 from 11 am - 4 pm
Experience the homes and gardens of the Metawanene Hills Neighborhood through a self-guided tour. Visitors will have limited access to the interiors of several homes whose original architecture, and in some cases the original owners, will deepen understanding about the history and importance of the Metawanene Hills neighborhood. Eight homes of Metawanene Hills will be showcased. Most of the homes are centered on and near Welch Blvd. Ticket Price: $6.00. Receive $1 discount when you bring canned goods to support the Food Bank of Salem Lutheran Church. Tickets will be available the day of the event at Cook School, 500 Welch Blvd.

There will also be a bake sale with a variety of home-baked goods ranging from homemade pies to hand dipped chocolates and much more. The bake sale will be located at Cook School, 500 Welch Blvd.

Flint GM 100th Car parade and show, Sunday July 20 starting at 10 am
Vehicles of all makes are invited to attend the GM 100th car show which starts on Saginaw Street. Special parking with be given to GM cars.  The GM 100th car parade will kick off at 1 pm from City hall. Participants must apply to participate. Applications can be found at FlintGM100.com.

Whaley Historical House Tours, Saturday July 20
19th Century Victorian House Museum will be open to the public. Billy Durant said “that had it not been for Mr. Whaley loaning him money to start his carriage business there never would have been a General Motors Company.” Whaley House has the original loan book of Durant's on display. Admission is Adults $5.00 and Children $3.00.

Grand Blanc Weld Tool Center's Open House and Employee Car / Cycle Show
Wednesday, August 13 from 11am - 6pm
Lots of fun activities for the kids, plant tours (if you would like to go on a tour, your shoes must be enclosed - no sandals). All proceeds from raffles / food donations will go to United Way.

Sloan Museum Gems from the Bulgari Automotive Collection May through September
These cars are a representative sample of Bulgari’s 150+ collections, most of which are General Motors automobiles and more than half are Buicks. Mr. Bulgari’s greatest interest is in automobiles built in the 1930’s and 1940’s.  The 1940 Super Estate Wagon is a beautiful example from that period but it also is an interesting collection piece because it appeared in the James Cagney movie White Heat and was then given to Bette Davis. Each vehicle is a driver and Mr. Bulgari may often be seen driving along the rural byways around Allentown in one of these unique vehicles. 

Flint Metal Center's 4th Annual New Vehicle Show and GM100th Celebration, Tuesday September 16 through Thursday September 18 at G-2238 W. Bristol Road from 10 am - 7 pm
View the latest GM vehicles including several 2009 GM vehicles. View a classic car show of GM vehicles beginning with a 1908 GM vehicle and ending with concept cars. Representatives from GM Services (On Star, GMAC, XM Radio and other) and local banks and credit unions will be on hand. Buy a car and help raise money for charity. There will be ice cream, food, music, and drawings for gas cards. Last year over 8,000 people attended and 58 vehicles were sold raising $13,000 for charities.
